3 types of group orientation were studied in both nominal and real group situations. Brainstorming procedures were followed to elicit responses from the 81 male undergraduate Ss. The results of a 3 × 2 factorial design and a 6-group simple-randomized design indicated that the situational variables studied were much more significant in affecting performance than the orientation types in these situations. Further evidence indicated that Ss preferred conditions conducive to inferior performance.
