As word-association norms for non-institutionalized retardates do not exist, this study assessed the feasibility of collecting such norms, using a sample of 19 non-institutionalized retardates. Responses to 100 words from the Palermo-Jenkins study (1964) were obtained. Results indicated that individual testing of Ss is feasible. The verbal repertoire of the sample was mote heterogeneous than that of institutionalized retardates and smaller than that of normal Ss.
