Self-assigned low grades on an unannounced quiz on cognitive dissonance created (in accord with hypothesis) sufficient dissonance to cause 69% of a group of 29 students to express unfavorable attitudes toward the quiz (or professor responsible for the quiz). Only 23% of a control group of 13 students who assigned themselves high grades did likewise.
