Abstract
A rating scale of 47 items was developed in an attempt to predict progress for student nurses in eight areas delineated by authorities as important for professional success in nursing. Reliability of the scale and reliability of the criterion were presented. A table of correlations representing the relative efficiency of each trait as a predictor variable of student nursing progress was given. It was noted that, as clinical instructors become more familiar with their students, they tend to continue to rely on the personal characteristics of the students in making evaluative judgments but also more on potential professional ability as indicated by developing professional skills.
