Abstract
Average family income was used in categorizing individual metropolitan school communities: “lower,” below $3500; “middle,” $3500 to $6500; “upper,” above $6500. Mean performance on the Metropolitan Achievement Test (Grades 1-8), the Essential High School Content Battery (Grade 10), and the Differential Aptitude Test (Grades 9 and 11) was positively related to economic status for both all-white and all-Negro schools in a city school system (Nashville, Tenn.) and in a surrounding county school system (Davidson County, Tenn.) with both suburban and semi-rural school communities.
