A replication of some of Bartlett's (1932) major findings of qualitative memory changes over time, with significant methodological variation. Changes in memory, over a 6-wk. period, along culturally predictable lines are shown with the story “The War of the Ghosts” and a method that measures retention through recognition and restricts measurement to a single occasion for each S. Some implications for personality theories are also discussed.
