Ss were tested for immediate memory of position in a spatial matrix. The independent variable was the number of alternative positions (uncertainty). It was hypothesized that uncertainty has independent effects during perceptual registration, retention, and retrieval. The results indicated that uncertainty influences the ease of coding during perception; the role of uncertainty during retention was not demonstrated.
