Dr. Manfred Guttmacher, in a recent article, criticizes Dr. Thomas Szasz's contention that elements in current psychiatric practices and institutions jeopardize the constitutional rights of the mental patient. However, Dr. Guttmacher's criticism often apparently fails to address itself to the substantive issues and frequently dwells upon peripheral and personalistic considerations.
