The Wiener and Harmon subtle (S) and obvious (O) keys for five MMPI scales have been widely used in research and in clinical practice. Correlations between S/O ratios for the five scales were computed (N = 100). A type of cluster analysis of these correlations suggested two types of S/O response balance. The S/O balance for the Ma scale appeared to be only slightly related to the S/O balance of the other four scales (which are themselves highly interrelated regarding S/O balance).
