Experimental rats placed in a cold box, approximately 35° F, once daily for 16 days defecated at the high average rate of 30 fecal boluses for the 10 Ss per trial. Control Ss placed in the box at room temperature, approximately 78° F, averaged but two fecal boluses for the group of 10 Ss. Testing for “externalization” on the 17th day failed to evidence the same. The E group produced 2 and the control group no fecal boluses.
