Abstract
The intent of the study was to test the replicability of the previous findings that spontaneous schizophrenic speech yielded similar proportions of non-Ah disturbances but higher proportions of filled pauses than did nonschizophrenic speech. 30 experimental and 30 control Ss were asked to tell the stories represented by 2 affective and 2 nonaffective picture sets in close and remote interpersonal situations. A comparison of the Ah (filled pauses) and non-Ah ratios of the groups by analyses of repeated measurements yielded Fs of 5.82 (p < .05) and 3.30 (n.s.), respectively, thus confirming the previous findings. It was conjectured that the results may reflect differences between the language distributions of schizophrenics and nonschizophrenics.
