Abstract
A 10-session pilot study was conducted to determine the effect of a visual-color reinfotcer on the verbal behavior of a deaf schizophrenic 11-yr.-old male. Through systematic reinforcement and shaping of specific sounds, S's vocabulary went from 0 to over 100 sounds per session. Operant stimulus generalization was attained when S responded to E's prompts in the classroom situation. Since S had never before responded to speech training, it was assumed that the visual consequence was a determining factor, though other sensory modalities played a part in the methodology. Theoretical assumptions were discussed as were implications for further research.
