John M. Eisenberg, MD, MBA, director of the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality and a longtime friend of the American Federation for Medical Research, died at age 55 at home on March 10 after a yearlong battle with a brain tumor. Dr. Eisenberg/s death left many in Washington/s health policy community expressing not only a sense of personal loss but also a keen appreciation of the unusual role that he played in elevating the field of health services research. Dr. Eisenberg was a friend, teacher, and mentor to many current and future U.S. leaders in health care as well as to his colleagues. In this issue, in lieu of The JIM Interview, which usually occupies this space, JIM offers a tribute to the life and career of Dr. Eisenberg.
