Two recent studies highlight the use of joint ventures as responses to unique opportunities. YoungG. RichardBradfordStandish in Joint Venture: Planning and Action (New York: Financial Executives Research Foundation, 1977, pp. viii–106) present a useful overview of joint venture activity, with emphasis given to international joint ventures. Besides providing a good introduction to financial considerations, accounting issues, and the structure of joint ventures (agreements on capitalization, management, and termination), they review case studies. In another recent study, HlavacekJames D. and his colleagues analyzed joint venture situations and technology, respectively. The authors showed why such new product joint ventures are being considered more often than in the past. They reach conclusions similar to those presented here, although our particular set of case studies provides another perspective on the issues of choosing partners and working out satisfactory operating relationships.
