Material for this article was collected through on-the-site interviews in thirty-nine companies throughout the United States. The case histories prepared on these sites reflected the experiences of organizations varying in size from twelve-man shops to some of the larger manufacturing organizations in the country. After initial exploration, basic schedules were prepared which guided the data collection for three interviewers. At least two of the three project members were involved in the data collection in each of the larger organizations. See the Appendix.
