Sacred Music in the Schools: An Update

Abstract

Since MEJ published “Can We Still Sing Christmas Carols in Public Schools?” in its November 1976 issue, we have received many requests to update and expand the information contained in that article. We there fore contacted state music supervisors and various interest groups during June and July 1979 to determine whether any significant new guidelines were being developed on the issue of using sacred music in schools. This article is a report on this survey and not an expression of any official MENC policy or MEJ staff opinions.
