Abstract
Mr. Ling, who is associate professor of music and director of bands at the College of Wooster in Ohio, has expressed a “strong feeling that there is something wrong,” a1 feeling no doubt shared by many members of the profession. Aware that, as a member of the Editorial Board suggests, this is not an objective treatment, MEJ is publishing this statement because of another strong Board sentiment that “airing” is what the subject needs. It is hoped that this article may cause other music educators to consider the problem in its broader aspects. We feel sure that you will agree with the majority of the Board that, whether or not you like what Mr. Ling has to say, he writes with “reader appeal.”
