Abstract
THESE “Guiding Principles and Recommendations” pertaining to participation of school music groups in outof-school activities, and the accompanying supporting statements were drawn up by a joint committee representing the Activities Committee of the North Central Association of Colleges and Secondary Schools, the Contest and Activities Committee of the National Association of Secondary School Principals, and the Music Educators National Conference. The final report of the Committee, as adopted by the North Central Association, was completed after a considerable period of study, involving much correspondence and a number of conferences which included, besides a meeting of the Joint Committee in Washington D.C., a meeting of the NCA Activities Committee in Chicago, and extended group discussions at the time of the 1956 convention of the National Association of Secondary School Principals in Washington, D.C. Participating in the latter were representatives of the Joint Committee, the Activities and Contests Committee of NASSP, and State Activities Committees of NCA.
The results of this thorough and penetrating exploration of related, but sometimes complex- even conviewpoints, and exflicting-aspects, periences are embodied in the report of the Joint Committee, which speaks for itself.
Commendation is due to the joint Committee and those who collaborated for joining and clarifying issues which have increasingly beshadowed a most worthy segment of the music education program: to the NCA sincere appreciation for invoking the influence of its leadership and authority by giving official status to the recommendations of the Joint Committee through unanimous adoption of its complete report as printed here.
