Abstract
When the author began the survey reported in this article his principal purpose was to gather information which could be useful to music educators and administrators in his home state of North Dakota. However, upon reading various articles and editorials in recent issues of the Journal and other magazines about contests, it occurred to him that his survey of festivals-competitive and noncompetitive-might be of interest to music educators in other states, since there seemed to be a lack of data regarding current practices in this rather extensive field of activity. So he wrote an article and submitted it to the Editorial Board- and here it is. It deals only with the competitive music meets; findings regarding noncompetitive festivals are saved for another article. Mr. Cory is assistant professor of music, University of North Dakota, Grand Forks.
