This philosophical essay explains how a dialectical approach to theory and practice can be useful to music educators. It also offers a dialogical approach to working through the conceptual and practical dilemmas raised by this dialectical approach. The elements of a dialectical approach are explained and criticized using a dramatic metaphor. Dialogue is a dialectic and a strategy for addressing the dialectics of theory and practice. Also, some of the ways in which dialogue functions are explored.
