Abstract
The main purpose of the study was to examine the relationships among music aptitude, IQ, and auditory conservation. The study was a modified replication of an earlier study done by the author (1979). The sample was comprised of 41 children with a mean age of 6.6 years, in San Antonio, Texas. Four tests were used in the study: Primary Measures of Music Audiation (Gordon, 1979), Wechsler Intelligence Scale for Children—Revised (Wechsler, 1974), and two criterion measures: Auditory Conservation Test and Visual Conservation Test. An alpha level of .05 was used to determine significance. Data revealed that auditory conservation is not significantly related to visual conservation (r = − .0347) and that auditory conservation is significantly related to music aptitude, to IQ, and the interaction of music aptitude and IQ. Multiple regression analyses, which included the variables of music aptitude, IQ, music aptitude-IQ interaction, and the predicted variable of auditory conservation, produced a significant F value of 4.47555 (p < .009) without data transformation, and 8.6644 (p < .001) when the dependent variable is transformed to − 1/Y3.
