Abstract
The gamut and solmization, two theoretical concepts devised by the ancient Greeks and developed as pedagogical aids by subsequent theoreticians, were used extensively in the music textbooks of 17th-century Britain and 18th-century America. This study investigated these concepts in the texts of several characteristic English and Colonial models. The influence of the British texts on the American books was demonstrated, accompanied by a discussion of significant historical and educational facets of the several works.
