Abstract
During my four years of service as President of the AAUP, higher education has been under increasing critical scrutiny and these examinations of the academy have led to a variety of suggestions for change. Some of the suggested changes would alter such essential aspects of academic life as tenure and collegial governance. An analysis of these suggestions indicates that there may be other motives for making the suggested changes other than those that are obvious. They may reflect a desire to save money and to shift the delicate balanced partnership that has characterized higher education.
