Abstract
This article builds on the work of Wallis on cult-to-sect evolution using as a vehicle the Jesus movement, most examples of which originated as cults but quickly evolved into sects. A generalized “value-added” model of major factors involved in the change from cult to sect is presented. Included are several specific elements in each of four separate areas: (1) group or social organizational factors; (2) individual factors; (3) similarities or “bridges” between cultic milieu and sect experience; and (4) factors external to the group. This model is presented in an effort to help explain changes in the many new social forms, religious and otherwise, that have developed recently.
