A scheme of voluntary student support units which has been in existence since 1997 has elicited favourable responses from students who participate. However, hard measures of learning behaviours, attitudes and outcomes for group members have been lacking. This paper compares the development of learning behaviours and attitudes for group members and non-members over a year, and looks at the effect of membership on grades. In addition, we report on an attempt to offer students more structure for their group activities.
