Abstract
Here and in subsequent issues of the Journal, this Special Section on Health Promotion Strategies will address broad analytical concerns, grounded in case studies in different cultural and national settings. The articles examine the interfaces and tensions between theoretical considerations and varying approaches to promoting health in populations. Each portrays situations in which communities have made important linkages toward empowerment. As a whole, this series of articles will go beyond prevailing, limited conceptualization in the field of health promotion, and will stimulate further research and aid those who are struggling in communities and workplaces for improvements in collective health.
