Abstract
Comparisons of the numbers of arrests for drug offenses in Nassau County, New York, from 1964 to 1970 are presented. Additionally, personality traits of heroin users are suggested. These data are used as a basis for justification of the training program described. Emphasis is placed on the role of application of research, improved treatment programs, education, and law enforcement as a means of salvaging human lives.
This article describes in detail the necessity for hospitals to provide “comprehensive treatment” facilities. It is recognized that personnel directly involved in hospital care of drug abusers need to be provided with appropriate training in dealing adequately with the varieties of drug emergencies referred to hospitals. A description of a proposed training program is detailed including objectives for each of nine sessions and implementation procedures to achieve these objectives.
