Abstract
Ceci's re-examination of the nature of prehistoric cultivation in Coastal New York (1980) is of considerable interest. There are some unresolved aspects of the conclusion that the prehistoric agricultural yield was marginal which deserve comment. Furthermore, Ceci does not clearly demonstrate that maize cultivation had no role in the prehistoric economy or in the establishment of sedentism. The extent of maize cultivation by Coastal New York Indian cultures is still equivocal. More data is required before conclusive statements can be formulated.
