Abstract
The design of any instructional system needs to include consideration of academic quality, aesthetic quality and quality of instructional design. Some elements of an explicit model for the requirements of a learning environment are introduced and the application of those elements to computer based instructional systems are discussed. Emphasis is placed upon the emotional factors needed to promote learning and the way that the computer can assist the student as s/he gradually builds a mental model of the world.
