Abstract
The U.S. Army Videodisc Interpersonal Skills Training and Assessment project (VISTA), was initiated to determine if the instruction of leadership/counseling skills could be enhanced with current computer-assisted instruction/videodisc training technology. The present article describes the Pedagogical mode of instruction, which is one of two instructional modes designed for VISTA. The Pedagogical mode was designed to incorporate established principles of programmed instruction as well as exploit the capabilities of the new computer-assisted instruction/videodisc technology. The result was a standardized role playing simulation in which immediate feedback is given after each critical decision point. This feedback is in the form of realistic consequences presented in a video segment and also in specific textual feedback. Five instructional features are highlighted which are believed to be unique to interpersonal skills training.
