Abstract
A perceptual inventory was developed in order to determine the relationship between societal or familial factors and the onset of marihuana use among youths, and to discover if these perceived relationships differed by demographic characteristics such as ethnicity, religious persuasion, and sex of respondent. This study reports the initial results of analyzing responses to the thirty-four-item inventory. Factor analysis revealed a five-factor, twenty-six-item solution; scales were labeled Rebelliousness; Societal Issues; Parental Limitations; Maturational Difficulties; and, Inherent Predispositions. Preliminary demographic analysis is included. It is hoped that continuing study of responses of additional samples will aid drug education programs by providing increased subject-matter focus, and will establish a data base to construct an inventory with widespread generalizability.
