Abstract
Dealing with complexity in a healthcare context requires the recognition of multiple variables impacting the interaction between the patient, the provider, and the care delivery system, resulting in situations in which usual treatments do not work as well as patients and clinicians expect. The Complex Continuity Clinic is presented as an innovative model for understanding and responding to complexity, particularly in a medical education setting, and for implementing different patient-engagement strategies. “Real world” clinical examples are provided to illustrate how pioneering approaches that embrace complex biopsychosocial health issues can result in higher quality of care and potentially reduced costs.
