Educational technologists have long looked toward computers as powerful and useful teaching aides. This article discusses some of the difficulties encountered thus far in attempting to realize this dream, and describes the potential of microcomputers, a technological breakthrough which may well overcome problems in cost and course-ware utility. A sample microcomputer system is described which enumerates necessary and optional components and their estimated cost.
