Engraved stones from Paleoindian contexts are extremely rare. Artifact engravings that have been recognized are often considered examples of Paleoindian artistic expression or evidence of symbolic behavior. Given the limited published sample of Paleoindian artwork, it is important to report all intentionally engraved items that might contribute to our collective understanding of this class of artifacts. In this article, I describe an engraved stone from the Clovis level at Shawnee-Minisink and briefly summarize other examples of possible Paleoindian art from the Early and Middle Paleoindian period.
