A number of concepts fundamental to a general systems model are reviewed and illustrated. The problems and issues of psychiatric consultation in the general hospital are then discussed in the light of a general systems approach. It is argued that such a model has useful application for the consultant psychiatrist who typically concerns himself with multiple sources of data in his clinical tasks.
