Abstract
In this article, the use of an advance organizer as a tool for teaching the functioning and use of a compiler is described. The concrete organizer chosen was used in a controlled experiment. Because previous research brought forth conflicting evidence on the effectiveness of advance organizers, the research reported here concentrated on segregation of concepts. The findings indicate that an explicitly concept-directed organizer is effective in providing a framework for incorporating new information.
