Abstract
A computer-based training (CBT) prototype for the U.S. Navy has been developed by staff members at Oak Ridge National Laboratory. The prototype, written in standard COBOL, includes an “intelligent” interface which is capable of responding to questions or comments (Q/C) entered as free form text. A method of keyword-mapping is used to determine the most appropriate response to a Q/C. The knowledge base is allowed to start small and may be expanded as students and the course administrator interact with the system.
