The use of music and poetry as tools to help manage grief are presented. The value of folk music as a style of music that is particularly helpful because of the message of the songs is affirmed. Poetry is presented as a further means of managing grief, one that is more reflective of individual moods and thinking. The article offers a range of examples of how music and poetry can be used to good effect in responding to the major emotional challenges of grief.
