Abstract
The question of “rights” is crucial to any group of institutionalized people as they feel they have lost their freedom. The ensuing discussion was part of a meeting of a group of elderly residents at the Kingsbridge Heights Manor (Bronx, New York). Death is very much a part of the daily life in the Manor, a health related facility. The “Karen Quinlan Case” came to the group's attention during a current events discussion. The group suggested that a special session be devoted to this subject. This group was developed to meet the needs of some angry, aggressive, acting out residents in the facility. One of its purposes was to offer an opportunity for them to expose and express their anger and its sources. The therapist's role was to stimulate expression of thoughts and ideas, emotions and feelings, — and to promote healthy interaction among members. It is quite clear that this discussion tapped some deep-rooted feelings and fears.
