Persistent backache often has more than one cause. When intensive investigation and multiple consultations fail to clarify the problem, it is the physician's dilemma, as well as responsibility, to determine a rational approach to management with special attention to individual needs and personality. The following clinical conference illustrates the problems presented by one patient and describes the treatment attempts.
