To appreciate the demise of archaeology from its former state of grace, I needed to view the juxtaposition of anthropological theory, my military background, and the real world. During an 18-month period, I was on a long journey through the dark recesses of my past. As I look forward, I see a faint point of light in a very dark tunnel. I am afraid to look down lest I see tracks; afraid to listen too closely lest I hear a train's sharp whistle.
