Abstract
In 1996 President Clinton and Vice President Gore chose Union City, New Jersey to announce Americas Education Technology Challenge. The Union City school district has transformed itself from a blighted urban district on the verge of a takeover from the state, to one of the urban success stories in education. The authors, working closely with school administrators, have conducted a summer long intensive course—Business, Community and Educational Applications of Technology course. The class was replicated systemwide as administrators saw a strong emphasis on student creativity and the expression of ideas take hold from a community perspective. The authors reflect on the logistics of teaching a course and the context necessary for successful scale up and implementation.
