Abstract
A self-instructional unit is presented to help students in the allied health fields through their initial experiences in counseling patients with serious illness. This unit is intended to be used in combination with didactic approaches. Clinically, the unit may be particularly useful for those who are learning to apply the problem-oriented record system. In the classroom situation, it may help in easing the student's thoughts and feelings into the world of the seriously or fatally ill individual. Considerable attention is given to the student's own experiences, opinions, and feelings. The unit is most effective when there is active guidance and participation from the instructor, although it is in a self-instructional format.
