Abstract
I prepared the following paragraphs [in italic type] as the beginning of an introduction to a special issue, “Marxist Perspectives in Social Medicine,” for the journal, Social Science & Medicine. The editor-in-chief of that journal, Peter J. M. McEwan, censored these paragraphs, thus publishing an introduction without specific details about the historical development of the special issue. Because this information will help put the special issue in perspective for its readers, I have asked that the censored passages appear in the International Journal of Health Services, which reaches an overlapping international readership. Readers should be aware about this internal editorial controversy within Social Science & Medicine, as well as the difficulties that have been encountered concerning editorial policy.
