Abstract
The Kalevala, Finland's national epic, is one of the most crucial elements of Finnish cultural identity, and it still occupies an important position in Finnish culture. Violence, death, and suicide are oft-repeated themes in Finnish folklore. The Finnish national epic provides an insight into past attitudes towards death. Traditions passed on from one generation to the next have obviously influenced people's attitudes towards suicide.
