Abstract
This paper focuses on research in the financing of health care services, and the evaluation of health insurance programs. After a historical review beginning with the work of the Committee on the Costs of Medical Care from 1927–1932, selected major research projects now under way in the Social Security Administration are summarized, including work on national health expenditures, private health insurance, health service utilization and expenditures of individuals and families, hospital costs and incentive reimbursement experiments, and the development of a national health sector model. The relation of such research to policy formulation is discussed.
