The use of a level IV microcomputer videodisc configuration as an effective trainer or simulator is no longer novel. However, given a potentially unsophisticated user group an innovative approach to the design and production of a videodisc component can result in a safer, “turnkey-like” system. Honeywell Canada Ltd. recently developed such a trainer for the Canadian military. The goal was to put together an individualized, self-contained, “black-box” part-task (classification of sonar echoes) trainer which contained both tutorial and evaluative components.
