Abstract
The costs and economics of learning systems are important disciplines for the learning technologist. This paper begins with a discussion of the man-machine system itself. It next presents a simple model for the life cycle of such a system. Within this context the phases of personnel subsystem development are explored. Next, a basic formula is proposed to estimate human subsystem costs. Finally, the implications of costs and economics are discussed related to a curriculum for the training of learning technologists.
