High-end scientific workstations and personal computers were combined to develop introductory tutoring modules in biology. Using UNIX, X Windows, PROLOG, and C, a laboratory exercise on leaf anatomy was created. The simulation, analysis, and advising activities were implemented in separate hardware and software environments. New tutoring metaphors for science laboratories give diagnostic help, situation-sensitive textual advice, and spoken information.
