Abstract
Two surface-collected artifacts from the Late Prehistoric Hatfield site, Washington County, Pennsylvania, are discussed. One of these, a small incised serpentine bowl fragment, is described, and theories of its possible origin in Tennessee are considered, along with a second serpentine effigy pipe that is reported to have been found in Washington County. The second Hatfield site artifact is the bowl of a steatite pipe that is attributed to the Protohistoric period. It is similar to examples from two West Virginia sites. Another steatite pipe, from an unidentified South Huntingdon Township, Westmoreland County, Pennsylvania site, is also described. The presence of the two steatite pipes in southwestern Pennsylvania extends the distribution of this little understood Protohistoric artifact type.
